They were most likley longnose gar, Lepisosteus osseus. Ive been fishing metro for years, and the only species of gar ive seen back there are the longnose. The spotted have a shorter snout, and slight differences in coloration.
Several factors play key roles into smallies moving from the lake to the St. Clair river. Bait, cover, current, & water temp. Many will say smallie migration main driving force is water temp.....well in a way it is but not exactly. First and fore most is bait fish. No bait = no smallies moving into the river. Water temp is an indicator.

I haven't done any ice fishing in area but I believe there is a ramp in Mitchells Bay, long walk out to deep enough water for perch fishing. Also a ramp at St Lukes, over 1 mile walk to get to deep enough water. If you Google marine cruiser it will show map of LSC.

After the main lake gets iffy the canals should be a week or so longer. Would think without a major rain the ice itself on the lake shouldn't be affected at all really just the snow on top the lake. Yesterday, got out around 4PM by the Selfridge DNR Launch. Lots of people fishing all around the launch, in the channel and up to 50 yds from shore. It is a great boat for fishing/cruising in the bay, but things get a little hairy south of the Clinton River. I think 2005 will be my last fishing season with this boat.
